French Immersion has a structural difficulty that is easy to underestimate from the outside. An Immersion student is not simply learning French — they are learning mathematics, science and social studies through French. When their language slips, it does not stay contained: it turns up as a mathematics mark, then a science mark, and the cause is invisible on a report card.

That is the problem this page is about. Surrey families usually contact us when a child who was fine in the early years starts struggling in the middle grades, as the subject vocabulary becomes technical and the reading load grows faster than their French does.

Why the Difficulty Often Appears in the Middle Years

Early Immersion works well partly because early content is concrete and repetitive. The vocabulary of counting, colours and simple stories is reinforced constantly, so a student builds fluency without noticing.

Around the middle grades that changes. Subject language becomes abstract and specialised — the French for numerator, hypothesis, erosion, sovereignty — and each term appears far less often than everyday vocabulary did. A student can follow a conversation comfortably and still be unable to follow a science lesson, and it is rarely obvious which of the two is failing.

Separating a Language Gap From a Subject Gap

The first useful thing we do is work out whether a struggling Immersion student does not understand the mathematics, or does not understand the mathematics in French. These need completely different responses, and schools rarely have time to disentangle them.

The test is simple: present the same concept in English. If the student grasps it immediately, the problem is language, and drilling more mathematics will waste everyone's time. If they do not, the subject needs attention in its own right. We check before choosing an approach.

Should a Student Stay in Immersion?

Some families arrive already asking whether to leave the programme. It is a real decision and we will not pretend it always has a happy answer, but it is worth making with information rather than in the middle of a stressful term.

Often the difficulty concentrates in one or two subjects and can be addressed directly, in which case leaving would sacrifice years of bilingual progress over a solvable problem. Sometimes the load genuinely is not working for that child. We are happy to give an honest read after working with a student, including when that read is that the programme is not the issue.
