Vancouver produces an unusual mix of French learners. Alongside the school students there are working adults who have discovered that a role they want lists French as an asset or a requirement — common in federal public service work, and increasingly in national companies with operations in Quebec.

Those two groups need different things. A student needs the marks their course awards. A professional needs functional competence they can demonstrate, usually against a proficiency framework and often on a deadline. We teach both, but not the same way.

French for Career and Proficiency Requirements

Adults working toward a language requirement usually have a defined target and limited time, so the work is planned backwards from the assessment rather than following a general curriculum.

In practice that means heavy emphasis on the productive skills, because speaking and writing are where working adults are weakest and where assessments concentrate. Comprehension often turns out to be further along than expected — it is producing the language under observation that needs the hours.

School French Across the City

For Vancouver school students the work follows the course: the vocabulary and grammar of the current unit, preparation for oral assessments, and the written accuracy that school French marks so strictly.

Students taking French through to Grade 12, or through IB, need something extra — sustained written argument and the ability to discuss a topic rather than recite prepared sentences. That shift is worth starting well before the final year.

Why Adults Stall, and What Fixes It

Adult learners who plateau have almost always stopped speaking. They keep studying vocabulary and revisiting grammar because those feel productive and carry no risk of embarrassment, while the skill they actually need goes unpractised.

The fix is uncomfortable and reliable: talk, badly, every session, with correction. Learners who accept that progress far quicker than those who wait until they feel ready, because that feeling does not arrive on its own.
