The obvious difference is pace — the lesson moves at the speed of the student rather than the median of thirty. The less obvious difference matters more: a student will admit confusion to one adult in a private session that they would never admit in front of a class.
That willingness is most of the value. A great deal of accumulated difficulty in mathematics traces back to a single idea a student did not want to ask about at thirteen, which every later topic then quietly assumed. Removing the social cost of the question is often what unblocks a year of material.
Surrey is geographically enormous, and the practical effect on tutoring is that in-person options are frequently a thirty- or forty-minute drive each way. Families take that on in September with good intentions, and by the middle of a wet November it is the first commitment to be dropped.
