Imagine a Grade 10 student who never fully understood how to isolate a variable in algebra. In Grade 8 that gap was invisible — the numbers were friendly, and guessing worked. But by Pre-Calculus 11, that same tiny gap detonates: rearranging equations, solving quadratics, and working with functions all assume that skill. Suddenly the student "hates math" and "just doesn't get it."

They didn't get worse. The gap caught up with them.

This is why cramming fails. Cramming layers fresh memorisation on top of a cracked foundation. Academic coaching works in the opposite direction — it digs down to find the original crack and repairs it, so everything built on top finally stands.

A quick way to see the difference: ask your child to explain a concept out loud, not just solve a problem. The single most powerful study habit is also the most uncomfortable: retrieval practice. Instead of rereading notes, close the book and try to reconstruct the idea from memory. The struggle to recall is what actually builds the memory — cognitive scientists call this the "desirable difficulty."

Here's the concrete version for a Chemistry 11 student learning stoichiometry. Don't reread the worked example — cover it and solve from scratch:

2 H₂ + O₂ → 2 H₂O

If you start with 5.0 mol of H₂, how much water forms? A retrieval-trained student reasons through the mole ratio without peeking:

(5.0 mol H₂) × (2 mol H₂O) / (2 mol H₂) = 5.0 mol H₂O

The student who reread the example recognises it; the student who retrieved it can do the next, unfamiliar version on the exam. That's the entire game.

Habit 2: Space It Out (The Forgetting Curve Is Your Friend)

Studying all of Biology 12 the night before the provincial is the academic equivalent of watering a plant once a month with a fire hose. Spaced practice — short, revisited sessions over days and weeks — dramatically outperforms one long cram.

The reason is the forgetting curve: memory decays predictably, but each time you retrieve information just as you're about to forget it, the decay slows. Three 25-minute sessions across a week beat one exhausting three-hour block, every time.

Here's a kinematics problem your student should be able to identify and set up, not just plug into:

Δx = v₀t + ½at²

A ball dropped from rest (v₀ = 0) for 2.0 s falls:

Δx = (0)(2.0) + ½(9.8 m/s²)(2.0 s)² = 19.6 m

The interleaved student sees the words "dropped from rest" and instantly knows v₀ = 0 and which equation applies — because they've practised distinguishing it from a projectile or constant-velocity problem, not drilling it in isolation.

Habit 4: Diagnose the Error Type, Not Just the Wrong Answer

When a student loses marks, the lazy fix is "be more careful." Effective academic coaching asks a sharper question: what kind of error was that?

  • Concept error: they didn't understand the underlying idea. (Fix: reteach the foundation.)
  • Procedure error: they knew the idea but slipped in the steps. (Fix: slow, structured practice.)
