Biology 11 has a reputation as the science you get through by memorising, and it is the reason a lot of capable students underperform in it. The vocabulary is genuinely large, so flashcards feel like the obvious strategy — right up until a question asks you to explain why something happens.
The terminology is not the subject. It is the labelling on top of a small number of systems that make sense once you see how they fit together, and that is far less to hold in your head than a list of definitions.
A student who has memorised the stages of mitosis can label a diagram. A student who understands why a cell must copy its DNA before dividing can answer a question they have never seen — and, incidentally, finds the labels much easier to remember.
Understanding is not the harder path here; it is the shorter one. We work on the why, and the vocabulary largely takes care of itself.

Usually the studying is re-reading and memorising, which builds recognition rather than understanding — so the material feels familiar in the moment and vanishes under an unfamiliar question. Changing how they study typically matters more than adding hours.
It is the foundation Biology 12 builds on. Biology 12 goes deep into human physiology and assumes cells, molecules and genetics are already understood rather than dimly recalled.
